PDF The Ultimate Pet Health Guide Breakthrough Nutrition and Integrative Care for Dogs and Cats Gary Richter MS DVM 9781401953508 Books
As a holistic veterinarian and scientist, Dr. Gary Richter helps dog and cat owners to navigate the thicket of treatment options and separate the fact from the fiction. He wants us to use what actually works, not just what Western science or alternative medicine say "should" work. This multifaceted approach to health is known as integrative medicine. Dr. Richter examines traditional medicine from many cultures alongside modern medical techniques, describing the best of complementary care and the best of conventional veterinary medicine. Every treatment he recommends has the backing of scientific research or years of successful outcomes in his clinical practice. After explaining the treatment, he offers specific recommendations for an integrative approach to common diseases, including allergies, skin conditions, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. A holistic approach to health includes nutrition, as it sets up the foundation for your pet’s health. Dr. Richter cuts through the hype in the pet-food world and explains how to choose the best commercial foods and supplements, and even includes both raw and cooked dog- and cat-food recipes for general diet as well as to treat specific needs. He also explains how we can use the right foods and supplements to "hack" the body’s processes, including the immune system.

The Ultimate Pet Health Guide Breakthrough Nutrition and Integrative Care for Dogs and Cats Gary Richter MS DVM 9781401953508 Books Reviews
- This book is a joke. Its written as thought the truth needs to be hidden and searched for elsewhere. You won't get it in this book. There are basically no straight forward answers. Chapter after chapter leaves you hanging and searching for answers. It was like the writer knew just enough to approach a subject, then pushes you off the cliff wondering what next. Totally inconclusive. One of those most frustrating books ever. We actually threw it away. If you want guidance and help for your pets natural health, this is not the place.
- I pre-ordered this book and waited rather impatiently for it to arrive for weeks because of all the good things I had heard about what was going to be in it. We had recently just gotten a rescue dog (german shepard) and were having all sorts of problems with his health. Based on Dr. Richter's advice, we made some changes to his diet and had a massive, immediate improvement.
When the book arrived (finally!) my wife and I tore into it right away. Usually when I have hyped myself up for something in advance, when I get it, it ends up falling well short of my expectations. With this book, the opposite occurred. It's just so thorough. Yet even though there is a LOT to this book, it is easy to understand, follow and benefit from!
We also have two cats and I look forward to applying what I learned in this book to their diet and overall well being as well. - I found this hard to follow and like many of us in small town america we do not have holistic vets... In most cases he warns not to try doing this on your own, not getting the right calculations of supplements can do more harm than good, work with a holistic vet... Well most don't have that option.. I love the recipes and my reason for buying was to start home cooking for my dogs and cats but actually this book scared me away from doing it cause it was so complex...
- I can not argue that there is a ton of information in here . But there is a glaring inconsistency that honestly makes this book worthless for what I wanted it for-mainly to determine if I am feeding my dog the kinds of foods/supplements.
Specifically- in several places in the book it states “Additional supplementation is not needed when your pet has a nutritionally balanced diet.†page 26 under Vitamins and Supplements. So then if you go to the area where he lists optimal diet plans for your dog - and you look at the Adult Canine Maintenance plan - it lists 8 supplements that you should add to the prepared food!
And I have looked everywhere in the book and there is NO explanation of what each supplement does or why we should include them in a normal dog diet. Here is the recipe 8 ounces rabbit meat, deboned 1 cup millet (to yield 3 cups cooked) ½ cup carrots 2 tablespoons organic canola oil 100 IU vitamin E (from capsules) ⅛ teaspoon iodized salt ⅛ teaspoon potassium chloride powder 1 tablet Kirkland Signature Daily Multi, crushed 1 teaspoon calcium carbonate powder 350 mg choline 250 mg pantothenic acid.
It also states in the book that “ over supplementing “ can cause problems as well.
Hard to believe such a glaring oversight - and I would be vary careful of using these diet plans without other information to back up why those supplements are needed. - This guide is a keep close to you - like cookbooks on the counter. Well researched, well written, I found remedies for my cat on behavior and claws I was never told about from other vets. If I lived in the area where their office is, I know who my vet would be!l Gary is a true professional, as I see from his writing style and this depth of knowledge on the subject. This is a must-read, and keep on hand. Interesting stories too. Bravo!
- When I purchased this book, I was expecting to get a thin book with a few ideas. I was completely blown away when I received it. This is the most comprehensive book on pet health I've ever seen, and it was well worth the investment. One idea from this book easily justifies the purchase price. I believe every pet owner who is serious about promoting the best health in their pets should have this book. An absolute must!
- Was happy to find holistic vet who cooks (vs. raw diet).
- Would have been nice to list some actual commercial brands of food that are better than others. The author seems to overly favor home made or fresh foods, which are not a choice for us because of the cost and lack to time, and storage limitations, etc.
